Sunshine Through Shade Trees

My mentor and I are reading a book together called Cold Tangerines by Shauna Niequist.  The premise of the book is that everyday life is something worth celebrating.  The author laments the prevalent mindset of always waiting on the next big thing; life will be great when… I get a new car, I finish my degree, etc.  She says that life is beautiful for the here and now.

This is a message of which I need to be regularly reminded.  Wendesdays are my day off from work.  Generally I like to do laundry and lay out by the pool.  However, we are a one car family for the time being, so I am relegated to just laundry today.  I want to celebrate something about my supremely mundane day.  Sunshine through shade trees is pretty nice, I have a lovely view out my big front window.

Shade Tree

This may not be a big deal to some people, but I grew up living in new houses.  And living in new houses means small trees held up by stakes.  I was walking with my dog this morning and enjoying my 50 year old neighborhood.  Because that means I get to be shaded by 50 year old trees.  I really enjoy the flickering sunlight as it passes between waving leaves and lands on my carpeted floor.  I also appreciate a respite from the blazing California sunshine.  Someday soon I want to hang a swing from one of the low boughs and enjoy the view from there.
